The Wellington Reading Room holds 2,400 volumes selected around three pillars: Pacific and Māori history, New Zealand literature from the colonial period to the present, and the literature of travel and exploration. It is open to all hotel guests around the clock, unstaffed by design, because the value of a library is in the solitude it provides.
2,400-Volume Curated Collection
The collection was assembled over four years in consultation with the Alexander Turnbull Library, Victoria University of Wellington's humanities faculty, and a network of secondhand and antiquarian booksellers across the North Island.
First-Edition Pacific Exploration Shelf
A locked glass-fronted cabinet holds forty-three first and early editions of Pacific exploration accounts - including two nineteenth-century New Zealand surveys - available for supervised reading on request from the front desk.
Reading Loan Programme
Guests may borrow any volume from the general collection for the duration of their stay, with a simple honour-system return process - the same principle that has governed private lending libraries since Wellington was a colonial outpost.

Twelve deep armchairs arranged around the room's perimeter and four writing desks along the window wall create a space where the social norms of quiet - no telephone calls, no meetings - are maintained by atmosphere rather than by posted rules.
Author Evening Series
Four times annually, the Reading Room hosts an evening with a New Zealand author - conversational in format, limited to thirty hotel guests, and always featuring a signed copy of the author's most recent work left in the collection afterward.
